"SX0A" Special Callsign, for Special Olympics
On 2004, seven years ago, 125 GReek radio amateurs, participated in a unique Special Call activity, for the Olympic Games ATHENS 2004. During this historical operation we have managed 146,731 QSOs on SSB, CW, RTY, PSK31 and SSTV mode in 10 bands. Also 202 DXCC countries from all 40 zones took the message of friendship and the Olympic spirit from our operators via GReek Bureau.

RUNNING SCHEDULE:
For first time ever, Radio Amateurs with SV0 prefix,  ie hams who visit GReece will participate in a Special Event Station Activity.
The Special Call is SX0A, and this is the missing Callsign from our previous activity "OLYMPIC GAMES ATHENS 2004".
The project will be supported by few SV operators to "fill the blanks" of time, equipment and also bureaucracy.
We will be OTA during the Games from Opening to  Closing Ceremony, ie from 25th of June to 4th of July 2011 in the following QRGs:

from Wikipedia :
Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions to more than 3.1 million athletes in 175 countries. Every day, somewhere around the world, Special Olympics athletes are training and competing. Alternating between summer and winter, the Special Olympics World Games are held every two years. Often the Games are the largest sporting event to take place in the World that year. There are also local, national and regional competitions in over 175 countries worldwide.
History
The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago in 1968. Anne McGlone Burke, a physical education teacher with the Chicago Park District, began with the idea for a one-time Olympic-style athletic competition for people with special needs. Burke then approached Eunice Kennedy Shriver, head of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, to fund the event. Shriver encouraged Burke to expand on the idea and the JPK Foundation provided a grant of $25,000. More than 1,000 athletes from across the United States and Canada participated. At the Games, Shriver announced the formation of Special Olympics. Shriver’s sister, Rosemary Kennedy, underwent a lobotomy in an effort to alter her personality. The brain damage inflicted by the operation caused a severe permanent intellectual disability. This disability is often credited as Shriver's inspiration to form the Special Olympics.
In June 1962, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp, known as Camp Shriver, for children with intellectual disabilities at her home in Potomac, Maryland.[1] Using Camp Shriver as an example, Shriver promoted the concept of involvement in physical activity and competition opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. Camp Shriver became an annual event, and the Kennedy Foundation (of which Shriver was Executive Vice President) gave grants to universities, recreation departments and community centers to hold similar camps.
In 1971, The U.S. Olympic Committee gave the Special Olympics official approval to use the name “Olympics”.[1]
The first International Special Olympics Winter Games were held in February 1977 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, USA.[1]
In 1988, the Special Olympics was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).[1]
In 1997, Healthy Athletes became an official Special Olympics initiative, offering health information and screenings to Special Olympics athletes worldwide.[1].[2]
In 2003 the first Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held outside of the United States took place in Dublin Ireland. Approximately 7000 athletes from 150 countries competed over 18 disciplines. The Dublin games were also the first to have their own opening and closing ceremonies broadcast live, performed by President of Ireland Mary McAleese. Most significantly the 2003 Games dramatically changed the perceptions and attitudes of society regarding the abilities and limitations of people with intellectual disabilities. The Opening Ceremony of the 2003 Games has been described by President of Ireland Mary McAleese as "a time when Ireland was at its superb best".[3]
On October 30, 2004, President George W. Bush signed into law the "Special Olympics Sport and Empowerment Act," Public Law 108-406. The bill authorized funding for its Healthy Athletes, Education, and Worldwide Expansion programs.[4] Co-sponsored by Representatives Roy Blunt (R-MO), and Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Harry Reid (D-NV), the bills were passed by unanimous consent in both chambers.

Othonoi (Greek: Οθωνοί, Italian: Fanò) is an island and a former community of the Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Corfu, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located northwest of Corfu. Population 663 (2001). In the 19th century the island used to be the capital of the Diapontia Islands Municipality, which consisted of the islands of Fano, Marlera and Mathrachi. Most of the island's inhabitants can trace their origins to Paxoi Island as people from Paxoi were settled in Fano beginning in the 1570’s by Venice.
Othoni is the westernmost settlement and island in Greece. The main yacht port of the island, Ammos, offers good protection only from N winds. Anchor off either inside or outside the quay. Fuel, water, provisions, ATM, tavernas, bars, medical center and post office.

During the last years the island is being slowly discovered by tourists for its crystal clear blue waters, sandy beaches and exotic caves. On the western part of the island, one can visit the cave of Kalypso , near the popular Aspros Ammos (white sands) beach is traditionally believed to have been the place where Calypso kept Ulysses captive. Another attraction on the E of the island, is the historic lighthouse built in 1872 ( N 39° 51' 48" E 19° 26' 06").
The island has four beautiful churches of Byzantine architecture.

4A4A Revillagigedo NEW ONE !

This morning i worked 4A4A Revillagigedo (http://www.revillagigedo2011.com)for a new one !! Qso made on 40m band CW .Very hard copy of the team but enough to work them.
Signals were coming short path from 315 deg.
It will be very interesting to check the long path propagation on this band due to our sunset.I think that the signals will be stronger.
The team will stay on the island of Socorro until 20th of March.
Good luck all with this dx

Transmit Power vs Antenna gain

The VP8ORK team is qrv from Orkney islands. This DXCC entity was a new one for me.But there was a problem. My linear amplifier 2 weeks ago had a problem on the Automatic Antenna Tuner board. Not a big one (some burned capacitors due to high swr) but i had to send it to the manufacture. So i was wondering. Will i pass through the pileups with the 100 watts of the transceiver ??? Well i got the answer.Yes! And not one time but six until now.
Of course the winner is the antenna gain.
Good luck all with VP8ORK

NASA Seeks Amateur Radio Operators' Aid to Listen for NanoSail-D

FROM http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/NASA_Seeks_Amateur_Radio_Operators_Aid_to_Listen_for_NanoSailD_999.html

On Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 11:30 a.m. EST, engineers at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., confirmed that the NanoSail-D nanosatellite ejected from Fast Affordable Scientific and Technology Satellite, FASTSAT.

The ejection event occurred spontaneously and was identified this morning when engineers at the center analyzed onboard FASTSAT telemetry. The ejection of NanoSail-D also has been confirmed by ground-based satellite tracking assets.

Amateur ham operators are asked to listen for the signal to verify NanoSail-D is operating. This information should be sent to the NanoSail-D dashboard at: http://nanosaild.engr.scu.edu/dashboard.htm. The NanoSail-D beacon signal can be found at 437.270 MHz.

The NanoSail-D science team is hopeful the nanosatellite is healthy and can complete its solar sail mission. After ejection, a timer within NanoSail-D begins a three-day countdown as the satellite orbits the Earth.

Once the timer reaches zero, four booms will quickly deploy and the NanoSail-D sail will start to unfold to a 100-square-foot polymer sail. Within five seconds the sail fully unfurls.

"This is great news for our team. We're anxious to hear the beacon which tells us that NanoSail-D is healthy and operating as planned," said Dean Alhorn, NanoSail-D principal investigator and aerospace engineer at the Marshall Center.

"The science team is hopeful to see that NanoSail-D is operational and will be able to unfurl its solar sail."

On Dec. 6,, 2010, NASA triggered the planned ejection of NanoSail-D from FASTSAT. At that time, the team confirmed that the door successfully opened and data indicated a successful ejection. Upon further analysis, no evidence of NanoSail-D was identified in low-Earth orbit, leading the team to believe NanoSail-D remained inside FASTSAT.

The FASTSAT mission has continued to operate as planned with the five other scientific experiments operating nominally.

"We knew that the door opened and it was possible that NanoSail-D could eject on its own," said Mark Boudreaux, FASTSAT project manager at the Marshall Center. "What a pleasant surprise this morning when our flight operations team confirmed that NanoSail-D is now a free flyer."

If the deployment is successful, NanoSail-D will stay in low-Earth orbit between 70 and 120 days, depending on atmospheric conditions. NanoSail-D is designed to demonstrate deployment of a compact solar sail boom system that could lead to further development of this alternative solar sail propulsion technology and FASTSAT's ability to eject a nano-satellite from a micro-satellite - while avoiding re-contact with the FASTSAT satellite bus.

The 4 m Meteor Scatter Contest - 4 m MSC

QSP FROM http://70mhz.org/4mmsc.htm

P R O P O S A L

The purpose of the meteor scatter contest is to stimulate the interest in both the 4 m band and meteor scatter random contacts.

Participants : The Four Metres Website hereby invites all radio amateurs to participate in The 4 m Meteor Scatter Contest

Date and time : 11 December 2010, 2000 UTC to 12 December 2010, 2000 UTC
Sections : All stations participate in the same section
Contacts : Only random meteor scatter contacts are valid

The contacts must unconditionally comply with the IARU Region 1 VHF Committee Meteor Scatter procedure with the following additions:

CQ calling may use the following procedure

* CQ SQRG = split and RXing on QRG and keeping TX on existing freq.*,
e.g. CQ S950 OZ2M
* CQ QRG = IARU Region 1 VHF Committee MS Procedure CQ QRG principle,
i.e. both stations QSY*, e.g. CQ 290 OZ2M
* CQ = no QSY,
e.g. CQ OZ2M

*: QRG above 500 means 69,QRG MHz otherwise 70,QRG MHz

The following strings may be utilised by operators using CW or MGM and short messages by operators using SSB to ask for missing information:
Message CW/MGM SSB
Both callsigns missing BBB Both calls
My callsign missing MMM My call
Your callsign missing YYY Your call
Duration and signal strength missing SSS Report
All information complete OOO All info
Faulty keying or unreadable UUU Unreadable

The other operator shall respond by sending only the required information. This approach must be used with great caution to prevent confusion
Modes CW, MGM and SSB
Exchange Callsigns, reports and final RRR must be exchanged
Points Each completed contact counts for the following number of QSO-points:

* MGM: 1 point per contact
* SSB: 2 point per contact
* CW: 3 points per contact

Each station can be worked ones per mode per locator square, e.g. JO65

A prefix multiplier is counted for each new WPX, e.g. CT1, EI2, EI3, G3, GM4, GW8, LA2, OH0, OH5, OZ0, and SV9. Please note that OY/ES7XX count as OY0

Stations changing square may add QSO-points and multipliers for each square

The total points is the total sum of QSO-points times the total sum of the WPX multipliers, e.g. 23 MGM contacts and 15 WPX, 5 SSB contacts and 3 WPX and 1 CW contact and 1 WPX = (23 x 1 + 5 x 2 + 1 x 3) x (15 + 3 + 1) = 36 x 19 = 684 total points
Adjudication Duplicates, erroneous and incomplete contact must be clearly marked in the log and does not count for points or multipliers

The contest manager's adjudication is final
Manager Please send your electronic log no later than 15 December 2400 UTC to Bo Hansen, OZ2M, at Callsign Rudius Net. Only electronic logs are accepted. REG1TEST logs are preferred, however, any plain ASCII/ANSI format will be accepted. If so please include name, locator(s), station description and comments in the email
Comments The timestamp of the QSO is when it has been completed or aborted

The rules of the contest only applies to stations participating in the contest

Announcing own CQ frequency, mode and period is permitted but not where reception takes place

Information about the contacts must in no way be disclosed before the deadline has passed

ASSISTED CATEGORY award program for CQ WW SSB CONTEST

Bob,K3EST reports

Dear Fellow contester

Many of you do not subscribe to the contest reflector or CQ magazine and you may have missed our public announcement. The CQ WW Contest Committee would like to inform you via this news letter that the ASSISTED CATEGORY award program has been greatly expanded.

n We announce the strengthening of the assisted awards program. Starting with the 2010 CQ WW contests, the assisted category award program will be greatly expanded.

n All Low Power and QRP assisted entrants will be specifically listed and eligible for awards as is already the case for unassisted entries.

n A band-by-band breakdown for all band assisted World, Europe and USA will be provided within the 2010 results.

n Lastly, the number of plaques available to assisted entrants will be increased to include Europe Assisted All Band and all World Assisted Single Bands.

We hope that this action provides an incentive for entrants using a QSO spotting system to join the assisted category.

Please make a note that the log submission deadline for SSB has changed to Nov 21, 2010 and for CW to Dec 21, 2010.

73,

Bob, K3EST
