Christmas holidays in Zagora, Phlio !!

One month ago I decided to book a room at ANASA HOTEL in Zagora of Pilio.

The owner, Alekos is a good friend of mine and a radio amateur of course, SV4ZQ who is active since the early 80’s.

Wednesday afternoon I was there. It was the first time,

I was visiting his hotel and the truth is I was thrilled. It is a combination of mountain and sea.

Zagora is the biggest village of Pilio. You can find many cafeterias, restaurants with great food and shops with the local products in the two main squares of the village.

Zagora is definitely one of the places to be during Christmas holidays.

It couldn't be better!

DXrobot update

Allard PE1NWL keeper of the DXrobot reports :

Dear DXrobot user,

You may have noticed that the DXrobot service has been down for some days. This was caused by a server crash last week, and it took me several daysto replace the disk and get all software reinstalled.

Fortunately everything is working fine again.I used the opportunity to also replace the mailing list manager softwareby a more secure software package (Mailman) that also offers moreflexibility.

The new mailing list manager can be reached at http://gooddx.xs4all.nl/mailman/listinfo

Enjoy!

SV/A Mount Athos.Broadband access with WIMAX connection !

from http://www.in.gr/news/article.asp?lngEntityID=929936&lngDtrID=252

WiMAX pilot network of OTE in Mount Athos is true. Already the first users connected using WiMAX wireless network for broadband access. The pilot network provides services and broadband IP telephony (VoIP).Achieving these services took place in an area extremely difficult, with limited infrastructure in roads, transport and communications, and lack of established power grid.Overall, 6 base stations installed on the scope of the network will reach 50 kilometres, covering the majority of Skiton and monasteries of Mount Athos, almost throughout the Peninsula. The WiMAX network which has been implemented has the capacity to 60 Mbps (both directions).
The WiMAX base stations emit OTE in spectral band of 3,5 GHz which have been awarded in OTE by EETT.
In the initial stage of operation, currently underway, have already signed the first users both at Mount Athos and the Isle Ammouliani and the region of Ierissos with wireless broadband access. Also, users in Karyes enjoy ADSL services through interconnected in WiMAX special equipment (DSLAM).
Among users of the network include 6 large monasteries, Athoniada School and the Holy Epistasia of Athonikis State.
The findings so far from the operation of the WiMAX network to Mount Athos is encouraging because the system has operated smoothly even in extremely bad weather.

AEGEAN VHF CONTEST 2008

The AEGEAN VHF CONTEST is over with a new personal record !!
I completed 96 qso's on 2m ssb and many dxcc's in the log --SV,SV9,YU,S5,9A,E7,4O,HA,OM,LZ,YO,TA,9H--
The weekend started great! Excellent weather conditions and thewRADIO CLUB OF KASTORIA team was all ready for the contest. The members were Steve SV2RM,Lakis SV2FNH, Dimitris SV2/VA2EEB and myself SV2DCD all /p.
Every member had their setup ready to begin the contest on time. SV2RM with 4 antennas DK7ZB homemade 19el each for 432mhz, SV2/VA2EEB with 5el F9FT for 6m band and myself with 2 antennas (2m band 17el CUSHCRAFT w/10m boom. Lakis SV2FNH was on the logistic (souvlaki, tzatziki, beer etc.. hihihi)
The contest site was located in grid squjare KN00LI at 1800m asl about 1 hour away from the qth. Everything went according to schedule and by 12:30z on Saturday we were ready to install our setup. We first started with the two 2m antennas. We then connected them to the splitter and a small 200W mosfet linear amplifier around 200w connected directly to the splitter for minimal coupling losses and removing any unecessary cable losses.
A 3m cable was used as a driving element from my YAESU FT-847 transceiver to the amplifier. I acheived a SWR 1:1.2 and was ready to go!
The 432mhz were next. The four 19el antennas were installed quickly with the help of the entire team on a 10m mast connected to a KENWOOD TS-2000 via a splitter.
Then the 6m band antenna (5el F9FT on a 6m mast) was connected to the same tranceiver.
At 14:00z Saturday afternoon we were on the air. I acheived the first qso on 2m with YT2L from KN03EH. Around 20:42, LZ5QD was logged and I decided to put the PTT down for the night and took some much needed rest.
By sunday morning, with the help of some strong coffe,I had a great time making some good dx's during the morning tropospheric propagation.
Bingo !! At 02:25z OM8A was logged!
Some good propagation openings during Sunday with my first dxcc's from KN00LI thanks to TA1D and 9H1XT.
Total qso's 96! I am looking forward to another great year!

WSE and 70MHz report from ON7EH

I had an email from Michel ON7EH with a link to his web site.
On 25-06 he added screenshots about his 1st 4m Rx experience with an indoor folded dipole and the WSE converters.
He copied my signal on 70.208 during e sporadic. You can see my signal in the screenshots above.
Michel writes in his web site

On the 25th of June, I was lucky enough to catch my first 4m Es opening with the SDR. The setup was very basic and consisting of the WSE modules connected to an attic mounted folded dipole (under the roof) for 70MHz.The signals were strong enough for the 70MHz WSE converter input to be well visible and easily decodable.(all in SSB) There is no LNA in the line so the NF is probably around 10dB.The 4m band is not allowed for ham transmission in Belgium by the local regulator so here follows my SWL-report in a visual way. One of the reasons is, no doubt the still active data signals (from taxi's) on the band, on discrete frequencies such as 70.150 and 70.175MHz.I read on the web that these data signals are often heard on Es openings... so now, one knows, where they originate from. They are quite loud, north of Brussels in JO20FV.You can easily spot the data signals on the left hand side of the following screenshot: (taken with an uncalibrated, non-optimised Linrad 02.47 so eg. the smart blanker was not operational)

On 70.175MHz and some 12kHz wide, the data signals cannot be missed. A similar data carrier is located 25kHz lower on 70.150MHz. Resulting key clicks from these carriers can be seen up and around 70.2MHz.The following stations were heard during the above opening and their signals can be seen from the screenshot::-70.190: IOJX (Tony in JN61GW)-70.195: IK0SMG-70.204: ???-70.208: SV2DCD (he was heard for long periods around 18:20 and back on 19:00 with good signals)
Here is another screenshot from the Greek station showing his extremely loud signals in Belgium...

Enrico, IK0BZY was heard calling CQ four, only twice
I was surprised to see the many stations centered around Rome, active on 4m!

Michel's nice web site with plenty of information is http://users.skynet.be/on7eh/index.htm

WSPR by K1JT released

WSPR (pronounced "whisper") stands for "Weak Signal Propagation Reporter." This program implements transmitting and receiving for a digital soundcard mode called "MEPT_JT", an acronym for "Manned Experimental Propagation Tests, by K1JT". This is the initial release of a GUI-based version of the program. Screen shot.Click here to download WSPR. Then run the resulting executable to install the program. A full manual for WSPR has not yet been written, but a Quick Start guide is available. Program changes since veraion 0.5 are described in the Changelog. A basic description of the WSPR protocol can be found at physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/WSPR_Announcement.TXT .
Please send feedback on WSPR and its use to k1jt at arrl dot net.
WSPR Suggested Frequency Matrix

Note: This table reflects current practice. I recently sent out an alternate proposal for 17m and 10m, but that is not reflected here.
Also, please note that many JT65A operators also run WSPR while on JT65A calling frequencies, particularly 7.076 and 14.076.

France on 4m band ???

REF (France) Annual Report re 70MHz
Here is an extract from the French national society REF annual report 2008 to their membership.
Further details may be found at: http://ag.ref-union.org/2008/rapport_moral_2008.pdf

Depending on how good your French is there are encouraging signs for Digital, HF, 4m and 3.4GHz interests - a country where their regulator has been rather restrictive in the past.

Live Ships Map AIS Vessel Traffic System

Real time Vessels positions

This service is on air as from December 2007: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/
Track vessels directions, find voyage-related information and see a map with current ship positions. The system is based on AIS (Automatic Identification System) which collects the current position on ships through VHF frequencies.
There is a note at http://marinetraffic.blogspot.com/ says that this is an open project and that they are inviting any volunteers wishing to install an antenna plus an AIS receiver and send the data they collect to the central server.
