Say "HI" to Juno!

What is this?

 

NASA's Juno spacecraft will fly past Earth on October 9, 2013 to receive a gravity assist from our planet, putting it on course for Jupiter. To celebrate this event, the Juno mission is inviting amateur radio operators around the world to say "HI" to Juno in a coordinated Morse Code message. Juno's radio & plasma wave experiment, called Waves, should be able to detect the message if enough people participate. So please join in, and help spread the word to fellow amateur radio enthusiasts!

This page will be updated with additional information as the event approaches.

How do I participate?

1. Find your broadcast frequency in the table at right. The frequency to use is assigned based on the last letter of your call sign.
2. If you have a directional antenna (Yagi), determine the headings to use during the event. The map below and a list of major cities (to be posted here soon) are provided to assist in determining your headings.
3. Visit this web page on October 9, 2013. The activity will begin at about 18:01 UTC and continue until about 20:41 UTC. This page will clearly indicate when you should key up or key down to broadcast "HI" to Juno in Morse Code.

If you participate and would like to receive a QSL card for contacting Juno, please send an email with your call sign and mailing address. Cards will be sent to participants who email this information in the months following the event.

Important:

• Please make sure your computer clock is synchronized to network time prior to this event.
• All transmissions must follow local and national regulations (FCC or the appropriate governing authority), regular ID, etc.
• Please insure adequate cooling and operate your equipment within safe operating limits. While the event's success depends on the maximum possible radiated power, NASA, Caltech/Jet Propulsion Laboratory and institutions affiliated with the Juno mission cannot be responsible for the safe operation of your equipment. Settings for modes such as RTTY or FM which use a constant power output would be appropriate.

• Operators with directional antennas should use this map and a list of reference cities (coming soon) to help determine their broadcast heading.
• Juno is directly above the indicated tick marks at the times they represent.
• Within ± 30 minutes around closest approach (c/a), tick marks are spaced 1 minute apart.
• For times >± 30 minutes around c/a, tick marks are spaced 5 minutes apart.
• Red section of Juno’s path is the 20-minute period when the spacecraft is in Earth’s shadow.
• Cities named are NASA & ESA Deep Space Network ground stations.

Summer 2013 is over

I am back from my vacations 5 days now.Everything reminds here that summer is over.Temperature is going down here in Kastoria.Lot of work was waiting for me at my store.And of course at my shack.Winter is coming so some maintenance to the antennas and some new installations are necessary.My ham radio activity this summer was not bad.First of all we had the 6m marathon.As always started in May and ended in Augoust.My results for this year was the best ever in this competitionI was able to work 100 countries in this period and take the 4th place

It is great to see two greek station in the top five list.
Spiros SV8CS did a great job in the second place
When i was in Zante ( i go there every summer for my vacations ) i visited his remote station and saw the excellent work you need to take the second and even the first place (6m marathon 2011)

In the beginning of July we had the Aegean Vhf Contest.This year another record of received log books.
94 logbooks from all over europe have received.Thank you everyone for participating.In my previous blog post you can see a list of the received logbooks till Augoust 12.

So what is next ?
Me and my good friend Panos SV2MCH we are planning to go qrv on VLF 137khz and 472khz.
Panos has made some good steps making the loading coil and the variometer.
I have started to make a Marconi T antenna so in the next days we will start some tests starting with the RX first.

Another plan is to put up my 80m vertical again.Some nice dxpedition are coming during winter time and we have to work them in all bands !
Also some work on my beverage antennas needed.And many many more hihi

Not only 6m band going great but also 4m band.I just worked a new one that i was chasing like crazy.
TF3ML/P worked on 70190    2 way ssb 59
Oli was 59 on 50120 and asked him to qsy on 4m.
After a couple of minutes he came up 59 on qrg !!

Great conditions during the last hours on 6m band.
During the weekend the conditions were very bad.Too bad for those who took place in the IARU 50mhz contest.
But since last night 6m band gave me two new ones and many other DX qso's
Last night i worked PJ4NX for a new one and many other from caribbean  like VP2V,9Y,FG and YV from south america
This morning i worked from east BV2DQ for a new one and BA4SI.
I hope the conditions will last for some time

VK Australia on 6m band again after 11 years in my qth

11 years after my last qso with VK on 6m band (2002 ) yesterday morning magic band gave us the opportunity to work again VK.
Stations from Europe (mostly southern) worked the VK8 aerea in an opening from 10z to 11:30z
The signals here in my qth were weak and with a lot of qsb but the qso's done
VK8MS and VK8AW in the log !!
What a great surprise!
I wish the propagation will continue like this with more DX and new ones on 6m band for us

Dave was strong on 6m band before a couple of minutes before

Some DX after long time

TX5K Clipperton Island dxpedition is ending soon
This dxpedition gave me the opportunity to visit my shack again after long time and work the guys on the bands.
My work and some trips outside of the country keeped me away from the radio
Anyway it was great to work Clipperton again (had FO0AAA and TX5C) but especcialy on topband which i needed here.Their signal on 160m was amazing and not only the signal but also their ears.
I worked them 1st call on 160m!! I wonder what is their antenna for this band.Congratulations guys.I wish you safe trip back home
p.s DXA is a great tool !!!

About VHF as you can see above the TEP conditions on 6m band are coming back again.
ZS beacons and stations coming weakly and day by day the signals are improving
Yesterday i had copy of ZS6YA on 50.110 cw 529 with big distortion.
My 4m rig is always on 70.200 and monitoring for any TEP there.
I wish this TEP season will be better that the last one
